In October, savoy cabbage (Wirz), Brussels sprouts, kale, red and white cabbage are in season, according to the seasonal calendar of the Swiss vegetable growers (gemuese.ch). That makes cabbage one of the cheapest vegetables for the cold season, but not every type and not every store is equally cheap.

We converted the shelf prices from our price data into prices per kilo. The cheapest is red cabbage at Denner, at CHF 1.00 per kilo. Fresh Brussels sprouts cost CHF 7.00 per kilo, kale around CHF 12.

Where you pay the most for cabbage

  • Shredded instead of whole: shredded white cabbage costs CHF 10.50 per kilo at Migros, a whole white cabbage CHF 2.00. That is just over five times as much.
  • Organic: at Coop, organic savoy cabbage costs around CHF 6.94 per kilo, the Prix Garantie savoy cabbage CHF 3.50. For white cabbage it is CHF 5.94 against CHF 2.00.
  • Frozen Brussels sprouts: frozen, they are not more expensive but slightly cheaper: CHF 6.20 per kilo at Migros and CHF 6.63 at Coop, against CHF 7.00 fresh. And they are already trimmed.
  • Kale: per kilo it is the most expensive cabbage, around CHF 12. It is sold in small packs of 100 to 300 g.

Four dishes and what a portion costs

Calculated with Migros shelf prices of 24 September 2026 (cabbage, potatoes, onions, apples, carrots, butter, cream, oil, vinegar, sugar, stock, grated cheese). We count what you need for the dish, not the whole packs. Salt and pepper are not included.

  • Savoy cabbage and potato stew, CHF 1.46 per portion (4 portions, total CHF 5.84): 800 g savoy cabbage in strips, 600 g potatoes and 200 g carrots, diced, 1 onion, 20 g butter, 2 stock cubes in 1 litre of water, and 1 dl half cream at the end. Simmer for 25 minutes.
  • Oven-roasted Brussels sprouts and potatoes, CHF 1.46 per portion (4 portions, total CHF 5.85): 500 g Brussels sprouts, halved, 800 g potatoes in wedges, 1 onion, 4 tbsp rapeseed oil, salt. 30 minutes at 200 degrees, then sprinkle 80 g grated cheese on top and bake for 5 minutes until golden.
  • Red cabbage with apple (side dish), CHF 0.61 per portion (4 portions, total CHF 2.45): 800 g red cabbage, finely sliced, 1 apple, 1 onion, 15 g butter, 3 tbsp cider vinegar, 1 tbsp sugar, 1 stock cube in a little water. Braise, covered, for 45 minutes.
  • Coleslaw with carrots (side dish), CHF 0.42 per portion (4 portions, total CHF 1.67): 500 g white cabbage, finely shredded, 150 g carrots, grated, 4 tbsp cider vinegar, 4 tbsp rapeseed oil, 1 tsp sugar, salt. Leave to marinate for 30 minutes.

A savoy cabbage of around 800 g is exactly enough for the stew. Of the kilo of white cabbage, half is left after the coleslaw for a second dish.

What cabbage is called in Switzerland

What Germans call Wirsing (savoy cabbage) is Wirz in Switzerland. White cabbage, Weisskohl in Germany, is Weisskabis here; red cabbage (Rotkohl) is Rotkabis or Rotkraut, and kale (Grünkohl) is known as Federkohl or Kale. In French-speaking Switzerland, savoy cabbage is “chou frisé”; in Ticino people say “verza”, and for Kabis also “cabis”.

Method

  • Data: shelf prices from the Eini price data, recorded on 23 September 2026 at Coop and Denner and on 24 September 2026 at Migros. These are regular prices, not promotions.
  • Selection: for each store and type, the cheapest non-organic option, no ready-made products. Frozen, organic and shredded cabbage are listed separately.
  • Price per kilo: pack price divided by the stated weight. For heads labelled “ca.”, the weight is approximate.
  • Dishes: cost of the quantities used, not of the whole packs.
