How the salary comparison works

Before a salary negotiation: how to use the benchmark

A single number rarely convinces anyone. The benchmark helps you back your ask with an official source.

• Compare like with like: check that role, experience and region really match your job.
• Think in ranges: look at where you sit within the range, not only whether you are above or below the median.
• Add what the statistics cannot see: responsibilities, certificates, languages and concrete results in your job.
• Allow for the time since 2022: the data is a snapshot. Current job ads show how the market has moved since.
• Name a specific figure: justify it with your profile and the benchmark, not with your personal costs.
• Have a fallback: if pay will not move much, negotiate training instead. The ROI calculation shows which course is worth it.

Where the numbers come from

The basis is the Swiss Earnings Structure Survey 2022 by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), known in German as LSE. It is built on pay data reported by companies across Switzerland.

Eini uses it by role, experience and large region, for example the Lake Geneva region, Eastern Switzerland or Ticino. The comparison does not give separate figures for each canton.

• Median: the salary in the middle. Half of the comparison group earns more, the other half earns less.
• Range: the band where most salaries for a similar profile fall. If you sit near the bottom of it, that is an argument.

A median is not a fair wage and not a ceiling. It only shows where the middle of the market was.
