For raclette, plan about 200 g of cheese per person, so 800 g for four. A classic moitié-moitié fondue uses the same amount: 800 g of cheese for four people. Ready fondue packs are counted differently, because one 800 g pack makes two to three portions.

At regular shelf prices, a raclette for four with cheese, potatoes and pickles costs CHF 14.80 at Denner and CHF 15.40 at Migros. With Raclette du Valais AOP slices from Coop, the same dinner costs CHF 34.30. With two 800 g packs and bread, a fondue for four costs CHF 22.30 at Migros with the cheapest mix. With Gerber, it is CHF 38.20.

How much cheese per person

Raclette. Raclette Suisse counts about 200 g of Swiss raclette cheese per person, by the piece or sliced. Its classic recipe for four uses 800 g of cheese and 800 g of small potatoes, with gherkins, silver onions and spices (Raclette Suisse, 2026). Swissmilk gives a range of 200 to 250 g of cheese and the same of potatoes per person. If you scrape from a wheel, it adds 300 g in total, because some cheese always stays on the rind (Swissmilk).

The Raclette du Valais AOP producers plan more for the traditional half wheel. Their classic recipe uses half a wheel of about 2.4 to 2.5 kg for eight people, so roughly 300 g each (Raclette du Valais AOP).

Fondue. Switzerland Cheese Marketing makes its moitié-moitié for four with 400 g of Le Gruyère AOP and 400 g of Vacherin Fribourgeois AOP (Switzerland Cheese Marketing, 2026). That is 200 g of cheese per person. The Vacherin Fribourgeois producers also use 800 g of cheese for four and add 600 to 800 g of bread (Interprofession du Vacherin Fribourgeois).

Ready fondue. Gerber says its standard 800 g mixes make two to three portions. It plans 150 to 200 g of bread per person (Gerber Fondue, FAQ). For four people, two 800 g packs (1.6 kg) give four to six portions.

Plain raclette cheese starts at CHF 12.00 to 12.50 per kg: the Migros block and the budget slices at Denner and Coop. The other cheeses in the table cost CHF 22.50 to 30.00 per kg. At 200 g per person, the cheese costs CHF 2.40 per head at CHF 12.00 per kg. At CHF 30.00 per kg, it is CHF 6.00.

The most expensive row is Raclette du Valais AOP. It is made from fresh milk produced in the AOP area, and that milk is raw, not pasteurised (Raclette du Valais AOP). Is the premium worth it? We asked the same about Alpkäse in summer. For everyday cheese, see Swiss cheese on a budget.

Fresh fondue from Aldi (Frischfondue) costs CHF 19.98 per kg.

The homemade version is not priced here: Eini's price data has no Vacherin Fribourgeois AOP.

Potatoes barely move the bill. A 1 kg bag of raclette potatoes costs CHF 1.30 at Denner and CHF 1.85 at Migros. Coop sells them in 2.5 kg bags for CHF 4.40, which leaves plenty for the rest of the week.

Pickles are cheap too. A jar of silver onions costs CHF 0.85 at Coop (Prix Garantie, 190 g) and CHF 0.90 at Migros (M-Budget, 200 g). Denner asks CHF 1.00 for 360 g. A jar of cornichons with silver onions costs CHF 3.95 at Migros (Condy, 315 g) and CHF 5.90 at Coop (470 g).

For fondue bread, Eini's price data only has one product, at Migros: M-Classic Fonduebrot, 300 g for CHF 3.65. Two packs (600 g) cover four people at 150 g each. At 200 g each, you need a third pack.

Per person, that is CHF 3.70 for the Denner raclette, CHF 3.85 at Migros and about CHF 8.60 for the AOP version. The cheapest fondue comes to about CHF 5.60 per person, the Gerber fondue to CHF 9.55.

Two 800 g fondue packs alone cost CHF 22.98 at Aldi, CHF 23.00 at Denner and CHF 25.90 at Coop (fixfertig). Bread is not included, as Eini's price data has no fondue bread for these stores.

Tip: Two 400 g packs give exactly 800 g of raclette cheese for four. Two 500 g packs leave 200 g over, and the Coop potato bag leaves 1.7 kg. Plan a gratin or Rösti later in the week so nothing goes to waste.

Where Eini fits

Eini's Groceries module builds a weekly meal plan around the week's real promotions at Coop, Migros, Lidl, Aldi, Denner and Aligro. When cheese is on promotion at one store, it can show up in your plan and on your shopping list, grouped by store. You set the number of adults and children, your cooking days and the stores you use. The first 3 meal plans are free; the Food plan then costs CHF 1 a week.
