Where the game in your trolley comes from
Most game sold in Switzerland is imported. According to figures from Proviande, the meat industry's organisation, Switzerland imported 2,609 tonnes of game in 2023, while Swiss hunting and deer farms covered a little over 35% of consumption (LID, 2024).
The origin is always on the label. Several of this week's offers are marked “EU”, and one red deer cut comes from New Zealand. If Swiss origin matters to you, look for it explicitly on the pack.

The line that matters is the second one. At Aldi this week, the same brand's Hirschpfeffer (venison stew) costs CHF 14.98 per kilo, against CHF 25.69 for the Rehpfeffer (roe deer). That is 42% less for a dish you serve exactly the same way. For CHF 17.98 you get either 700 g of Rehpfeffer or 1.2 kg of Hirschpfeffer.

That is about CHF 7.70 per person for a full Wildteller: 300 g of stew, Spätzli, red cabbage, chestnuts, half a poached pear and lingonberries. Two shelf choices make the difference. In the same price data, chilled fresh Spätzli cost CHF 3.90 for 500 g against CHF 1.90 for dried Wellenspätzli, and a seasoned 300 g red cabbage costs CHF 4.95 against CHF 2.20 for a plain one. On the plate, they do the same job.
Braise it yourself?
If you have a free afternoon, raw meat gives you more for the money. Aligro's roe deer ragout costs about CHF 24 per kilo this week, less than Aldi's ready Rehpfeffer, whose weight includes the sauce. Braising takes two to three hours plus red wine and root vegetables, so it pays off mainly when you cook for six or more, or freeze half for a second meal.
A simple rule for the season: compare game by the price per kilo, not per pack. Pack sizes differ from 200 g to more than a kilo, and the cheapest-looking pack is often not the cheapest meal.
