If you are employed by an employer in Switzerland for at least eight hours a week, your employer insures you against accidents, including in your free time. You can then have the accident cover of your health insurance suspended, and your premium goes down (BAG).
How much this brings is limited by law: at most 7% of the premium (Art. 91a para. 4 KVV, BAG circular 5.1). We compared the 2027 premiums of all insurers with and without accident cover. Most insurers give the full 7%. For adults 26 and over in the standard model with a CHF 300 franchise, that is CHF 495 a year on average across the 42 premium regions, from CHF 354 in Zug to CHF 635 in Ticino (region 1).

Who can suspend accident cover
- Employed for 8 hours a week or more by an employer in Switzerland: you are fully insured under the UVG, that is against occupational and non-occupational accidents. You may then suspend the accident cover of your health insurance (BAG).
- Less than 8 hours a week: you are only insured against occupational accidents, not in your free time. You still need the accident cover of your health insurance (AHV/IV leaflet 6.05).
- Not employed (for example children, students, retired people, self-employed people without voluntary UVG insurance): accident cover stays with your health insurance.
- From when: you apply to your insurer and show that you are fully insured under the UVG. The suspension starts at the earliest on the first day of the following month (BAG).
How much you save in 2027 in your region
The discount is a percentage of the premium. Where premiums are high, you therefore save more francs. For each premium region, the table shows what you save per year with the median insurer, and the range across all insurers. Your premium region depends on the municipality you live in (Priminfo, premium regions 2027).

Not every insurer gives the full 7%
The law only sets the upper limit. Each insurer decides how large the discount is, based on the accident costs of its insured people (BAG circular 5.1). 12 of the 21 insurers active in all 42 regions give the full 7% in 2027. At some it is much less, at vita surselva only 0.6%.

Job gone, fewer hours, retirement: put accident cover back in
Accident insurance through your employer ends on the 31st day after the day on which your entitlement to at least half your pay ends. With extended cover insurance (Abredeversicherung) you can extend it by up to six months (BAG).
As soon as cover under the UVG ends, your health insurer covers accidents again (Art. 8 para. 2 KVG). Your employer must inform you in writing, and you must report it to your health insurer. If you do not, the insurer can claim back the premium share for accident cover, plus default interest, from the end of UVG cover (Art. 10 KVG, Fedlex).
Typical triggers are retirement, leaving a job without a new one, working fewer than eight hours a week or becoming self-employed.
How to go about it
- Check your hours. Do you work at least eight hours a week for the same employer in Switzerland?
- Apply. Tell your health insurer that you want to suspend accident cover, and include proof, for example a confirmation from your employer.
- Pay less from the following month. The lower premium applies at the earliest from the first day of the following month.
- Take it with you when you switch. If you switch insurer for 1 January 2027, choose the option without accident cover directly with the new insurer. Your cancellation must reach your current insurer by Monday, 30 November 2026.
- Report changes. If cover through your employer ends, tell your health insurer straight away.

Method and data
- Source: 2027 premium data of compulsory health insurance (BAG, opendata.swiss, as of 29 September 2026).
- What we compare: for each insurer, each premium region and each franchise, we compare the same premium with and without accident cover: 1'019 pairs in the standard model per franchise. Profile: adults 26 and over, standard model, monthly premiums.
- Discount in percent: difference divided by the premium with accident cover. The median is 6.98%, the highest value 7.01% (rounding to 5 centimes).
- Median insurer: median of the savings of all insurers in a region. The average of the regions is the simple mean of these 42 values.
- Independent: Eini sells no insurance, does not broker contracts and receives no commissions. This page compares premiums and recommends no particular insurer.
Where Eini fits
In the Insurance module you store your policies, Eini reminds you of deadlines such as 30 November and compares your basic health insurance with the official BAG premiums 2026 and 2027. The module is part of Eini Premium: CHF 3 a week or CHF 90 a year, with 7 days free.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do I save on health insurance without accident cover?
At most 7% of the premium, as set out in Art. 91a para. 4 KVV. In 2027 most insurers give the full 7%. For adults 26 and over in the standard model with a CHF 300 franchise, that is CHF 39.50 a month as the median of all insurers and regions, and CHF 495 a year on average across the 42 premium regions (BAG premium data 2027, Eini calculation).
Who can suspend the accident cover of their health insurance?
Anyone who is employed by an employer in Switzerland for at least eight hours a week and is therefore fully insured under the UVG. If you work less, are not employed or are retired, you need the accident cover of your health insurance (BAG).
When does the lower premium without accident cover apply?
The suspension starts at the earliest on the first day of the month after your request, once you show that you are fully insured under the UVG (BAG).
What do I need to do if I retire or lose my job?
Cover through your employer ends on the 31st day after your entitlement to pay ends. After that, your health insurer covers accidents again, but you must tell it. Otherwise it can claim back the premium share for accidents, plus default interest (Art. 8 and 10 KVG).
