As of 21 September 2026, the 2027 health insurance premiums have not been published. The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH, or BAG in German) checks them before they are released, and the announcement normally comes in late September: last year it was on 23 September. Any percentage you read before that day is somebody's forecast, not a premium.
What is already fixed is the calendar. The dates below come from Priminfo, the federal government's own premium portal, and they repeat every year. Know them now, and the announcement becomes a task with a deadline instead of bad news.
What is known today, and what is not
The last official figure is for this year. For 2026 the mean monthly premium is CHF 393.30, which was 4.4% or CHF 16.60 more than in 2025 (FOPH media release, 23 September 2025). That is a mean across every insured person, age group, canton and model in the country. Your own premium can move very differently from the national figure, in either direction.
For 2027 there is nothing official yet. The insurers set the premiums and the FOPH verifies that the calculation follows the law. Until that is done and published, no calculator can show you your 2027 premium.
A rule for the next few days: do not sign up for a new basic policy on the strength of a forecast. Wait until the approved 2027 premiums are online, then compare.
The calendar from now to 1 January
| When | What happens | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Late September | The FOPH publishes the approved 2027 premiums | Compare on the official calculator at priminfo.admin.ch |
| By 31 October | Your insurer must have told you your new premium | Read the letter: premium, model and franchise |
| By 15 November | The date Priminfo recommends for posting your cancellation, and for telling your insurer about a franchise change | Send it registered or by A-Post Plus |
| 30 November | The cancellation must have arrived at your insurer | Nothing, if you posted it mid-November. In 2026 the 30th is a Monday |
| By 15 December | The date Priminfo recommends for sending your application to the new insurer | Better: apply at the same time as you cancel |
| 1 January 2027 | The new cover starts | Check the first invoice |
The line that catches people out is 30 November. It is an arrival deadline, not a postmark deadline, which is why Priminfo recommends posting two weeks earlier. Sample letters for both the cancellation and the new application are available on Priminfo.
Three things you can do this week, before any number is out
1. Find your current policy. Write down four values: insurer, model, franchise and monthly premium. Those are the four things you will compare, and most people cannot name all four without looking.
2. Add up what you actually spent on healthcare this year. That total, not the premium, decides which franchise is cheapest for you. We covered the calculation in which franchise actually saves you money.
3. Check for open invoices. According to Priminfo you cannot change insurer if, on 31 December, you still owe your current one amounts for which you received a reminder by 30 November. Clearing them now removes the one thing that can block a switch.
One more, if you have supplementary cover: it is a separate contract with its own notice period, set in the insurer's general conditions. Many contracts ask for three months' notice to the end of the year, which means 30 September. Yours may differ, so look it up this week. Priminfo is explicit that an insurer may not force you to cancel your supplementary cover because you leave its basic insurance.
What switching changes, and what it does not
Basic insurance is defined in federal law, so the covered treatments are the same at every insurer. You are comparing price and service, nothing else. Every insurer must accept you for basic cover regardless of age or health, and there is no health questionnaire (Priminfo).
You do not have to change insurer to pay less. If you have the standard model, you can move into a family doctor, HMO or telemedicine model at any time of year. If you already have one of those models, you can change it for 1 January. The full walk-through is in switching health insurer: deadlines and savings.
Where Eini fits
The official premiums live on Priminfo, and that is where you should compare them. What Eini's Insurance module does is keep the rest in order: it stores your policies with their cancellation deadlines, reminds you before each one, and calculates which franchise is cheapest for the medical costs you expect. Insurance is one of five modules included in Eini Premium (CHF 3 a week or CHF 90 a year, with a 7-day free trial).
We will update this article once the FOPH has published the 2027 figures.
Frequently Asked Questions
When will the 2027 health insurance premiums be published?
The Federal Office of Public Health normally publishes the approved premiums in late September; for 2026 it was on 23 September 2025. As of 21 September 2026 the 2027 premiums had not been published. Your own insurer must tell you your new premium by 31 October.
What is the deadline to change health insurer for 2027?
Your cancellation must have arrived at your current insurer by 30 November 2026, which is a Monday. Priminfo, the federal premium portal, recommends posting it by 15 November, registered or by A-Post Plus, and applying to the new insurer at the same time.
Can I change my franchise without changing insurer?
Yes. Priminfo recommends telling your insurer by 15 November, whether you want a higher or a lower franchise. The change applies from 1 January.
Can a health insurer refuse me for basic insurance?
No. Every insurer must accept every applicant for basic insurance, whatever their age or state of health, and there is no health questionnaire. This does not apply to supplementary insurance, which is a separate contract.
