The AHV pension 2027 rises by around 1.59%: from 1 January 2027 the minimum pension is CHF 1'280 a month and the maximum pension CHF 2'560 (Federal Council, 2 October 2026). On top of this comes the 13th old-age pension for the first time, paid in December 2026 as a supplement to the December pension to around 2.6 million pensioners (FSIO, implementation of the 13th AHV pension, as of 5 October 2026).

Here you will find all the amounts for 2026 and 2027 in one table, who gets the 13th pension, how much it is for you and what married couples need to know. If you live on a fixed pension, you can use Eini to plan the week's meals around the stores' real promotions and get the shopping list with it.

Key takeaways

How much is the AHV pension in 2027?

The AHV pension 2027 is between CHF 1'280 and CHF 2'560 a month if you have no contribution gaps. The Federal Council decided the adjustment on 2 October 2026, and it applies from 1 January 2027 (Federal Council, 2 October 2026). Pensions are usually adjusted to wages and prices every two years, most recently in 2025. The basis is the mixed index: the arithmetic mean of the price index and the wage index.

In 2027 the maximum pension is twice as high as the minimum pension. How much you get yourself depends on your contribution years and your average income. If you are missing contribution years, your pension is lower too.

We explain the new limits for pillar 3a and the pension fund in our post on pillar 3a 2027. In supplementary benefits (EL), the general living costs rise to CHF 10'980 a year for children over 11 and to CHF 7'710 a year for children under 11 (Federal Council, 2 October 2026).

When is the 13th AHV pension paid?

The 13th AHV pension is paid every year in December, for the first time in December 2026 (FSIO, FAQ). The 13th pension is not a separate payment at another time, but a supplement to the December pension (FSIO, implementation of the 13th AHV pension).

The Federal Council confirmed the date on 12 November 2025 (FSIO, 12 November 2025). The initiative for a 13th AHV pension was accepted in the vote of 3 March 2024 (FSIO, 12 November 2025).

Who gets the 13th AHV pension?

You get the 13th AHV pension if you are entitled to an AHV old-age pension in December (FSIO). Other pensions do not get a supplement:

  • IV pensions (disability insurance) are still paid twelve times a year. When you reach the reference age, the IV pension becomes an AHV old-age pension, and from then on you also get the 13th pension.
  • Widow's, widower's and orphan's pensions stay at twelve payments. If you reach the reference age, you get whichever pension is higher over the whole year.
  • Widows and widowers who had already reached the reference age on 1 January 2026 will receive a letter from the compensation office if the old-age pension with the 13th pension is higher. They can then choose within 30 days; without a reply, the old-age pension applies automatically (FSIO, implementation of the 13th AHV pension).
  • Supplementary benefits (EL): the 13th AHV pension must not lead to a reduction or cancellation of EL. It does not count as income in the EL calculation (FSIO, implementation of the 13th AHV pension).

In 2026 the reference age is 65 for men and 64 years and 6 months for women (FSIO, implementation of the 13th AHV pension).

How much is my 13th AHV pension?

The 13th AHV pension is one twelfth of the old-age pension you receive in the year, rounded to whole francs (FSIO, FAQ). If you get the same pension all year, the 13th pension is as high as one monthly pension. Children's pensions, supplementary pensions and the pension supplement for women of the AHV 21 transitional generation are not included. You will only know the exact amount in December, because your pension can change during the year.

Minimum pension, full contribution recordCHF 1'260CHF 16'380CHF 1'280CHF 16'640
Maximum pension, full contribution recordCHF 2'520CHF 32'760CHF 2'560CHF 33'280
Married couple, both pensions together at the maximum (Eini assumption on the 13th pension)CHF 3'780CHF 49'140CHF 3'840CHF 49'920
Eini calculation: 13 times the monthly pension, for a whole year with the same pension. Amounts: Federal Council, 2 October 2026, AHV/IV leaflet 3.01. As of 9 October 2026.

Without the 13th pension, the maximum pension would come to CHF 30'720 a year in 2027. So the 13th pension adds CHF 2'560, or CHF 1'280 with the minimum pension.

What applies to married couples?

For married couples, the two individual pensions together must not exceed 150% of the maximum pension (AHV/IV leaflet 3.01). In 2026 that is CHF 3'780 a month, in 2027 it is CHF 3'840. Because the 13th pension is one twelfth of the annual old-age pension, we assume it is based on the already reduced pension (Eini's own calculation): the supplement for the couple together would be at most CHF 3'780 in December 2026 and at most CHF 3'840 in December 2027.

If both had the maximum pension, it would be CHF 5'120 a month without the cap. So in 2027 the reduction is up to CHF 1'280 a month, or up to CHF 16'640 a year with the 13th pension.

Worked examples: your AHV pension in 2027

The three profiles are examples, not real people. They show how the FSIO rules work out.

Example: single, full contribution record, maximum pension

  • Pension 2026: CHF 2'520 a month, plus the 13th pension of CHF 2'520 in December 2026.
  • Pension 2027: CHF 2'560 a month, so 12 times CHF 2'560 plus a 13th pension of CHF 2'560.

Result: CHF 33'280 for 2027, CHF 520 more than in 2026.

Example: married couple, both retired, both with the maximum pension

  • Without the cap, it would be 2 times CHF 2'560 = CHF 5'120 a month.
  • With the 150% cap: CHF 3'840 a month for both together; on our assumption, the 13th pension is based on this amount.

Result: 13 times CHF 3'840 = CHF 49'920 for 2027 for the couple (Eini calculation).

Example: pension from August 2026, CHF 2'000 a month

  • In 2026, 5 monthly pensions are paid (August to December): 5 times CHF 2'000 = CHF 10'000.
  • The 13th pension is one twelfth of that: CHF 10'000 divided by 12, rounded to whole francs.

Result: a 13th pension of CHF 833 in December 2026. From 2027, with a full pension year, it is as high as one monthly pension.

How is the 13th AHV pension financed?

The financing has not been decided yet. In the final votes of 19 June 2026, Parliament approved an increase in VAT of 0.4 percentage points from 2028. The people will vote on it on 29 November 2026 (FSIO, implementation of the 13th AHV pension).

According to the Federal Council, the pension increase leads to additional costs of around CHF 1'055 million in total, of which CHF 940 million for the AHV and CHF 115 million for the IV (Federal Council, 2 October 2026).

Tips: what you can do now

  1. Plan for December 2026. With a pension for the whole year, a second monthly pension is added in December, CHF 2'520 with the maximum pension. If you only retired in 2026, you get a proportionally smaller amount, see example 3.
  2. Adjust your 2027 budget. With a full contribution record, the pension rises by CHF 20 to CHF 40 a month. How much a household needs for food is shown in our budget by household size.
  3. Check your health insurance by 30 November. Your health insurer must tell you your 2027 premium by 31 October 2026. If you want to switch, your cancellation must reach your insurer by 30 November 2026 (Priminfo, FOPH). All dates in the 2027 premiums calendar.
  4. Widows and widowers: reply to the compensation office's letter. If you were at the reference age on 1 January 2026 and receive a letter from the compensation office, you have 30 days to choose between the pensions. Without a reply, the old-age pension applies.
  5. Self-employed and non-employed people: from 2027, the minimum contribution to AHV, IV and EO is CHF 541 a year instead of CHF 530.
  6. Still working? Pillar 3a by 31 December. With a pension fund, you can pay in and deduct up to CHF 7'258 in 2026; deadlines are in our post on pillar 3a. Which other deductions are often forgotten is covered in forgotten tax deductions.
