The one-off cost of moving canton in Switzerland is dominated by two items: a deposit of up to three months' rent on the new flat, and a three-month notice period on the old one. On a CHF 1'600 flat that is CHF 4'800 locked away, on top of whatever the removal firm and the restock cost.

The recurring side decides it. On Eini's own indicative figures a 3.5-room flat runs about CHF 2'800 a month in Zurich and about CHF 1'600 in St. Gallen. But rent is one of three lines that change at a cantonal border. Tax and the health premium move too, not always in your favour.

What are the one-off costs of moving canton

Five lines account for almost all of it: the deposit, the rent you keep paying on the old flat, the removal firm, the paperwork at both communes, and what a new flat makes you buy in week one. Only the deposit comes back.

Why the deposit and the notice period hit together

A Swiss deposit is not a payment. It sits in a blocked account in your name, releasable only with both signatures or by a court, and the new landlord wants it funded before you get the keys. The old one comes back only once the handover protocol is signed and any damage claims settled — routinely weeks after you move out.

The notice period is the other trap. Three months is standard, and it runs to the next official termination date named in your lease, not a date you pick. If your lease terminates at the end of March, June and September and you post notice on 5 July, you have missed 30 September: the notice takes effect at the end of December. Three extra months on a CHF 2'800 flat is CHF 8'400 nobody budgeted.

There is a way out. Propose a replacement tenant who is solvent, willing to take the lease on the same terms and reasonable for the landlord to accept, and you are normally released early. In writing, from the day you give notice.

Budget for two deposits in the same month. Leaving a CHF 2'800 flat and taking a CHF 1'600 one, that is up to CHF 13'200 in blocked accounts at once — money you cannot spend on the move.

What actually changes on your budget every month

Three lines move when you cross a cantonal border, and only one is the line people look at.

Rent. The gap is real, but it is a town-level gap. On Eini's indicative figures a 3.5-room flat runs CHF 2'800 in Zurich, CHF 2'400 in Zug, CHF 1'900 in Bern and CHF 1'300 in Appenzell Innerrhoden. Compare the same number of rooms, and check whether the rent includes Nebenkosten.

Tax. Switzerland taxes in three layers: federal, cantonal and communal. Federal tax is identical everywhere, so the whole difference between two addresses comes from the cantonal rate plus the commune's multiplier. Two villages in one canton can differ more than you expect — a cantonal average is a starting point, never your bill. Run your exact commune through the Federal Tax Administration's tax calculator.

Health premium. This is the one newcomers miss. KVG/LAMal basic insurance is not deducted from your salary — every adult pays it separately — and the premium follows your canton and premium region of residence. Move on 1 November and the new canton's price applies from November: you keep your insurer, the price changes underneath you. On Eini's indicative figures an adult pays around CHF 396 a month in Zurich, CHF 421 in Basel-Stadt and CHF 348 in Zug.

Basic cover is identical by law at every insurer, so your franchise (CHF 300 to CHF 2'500) and your model — standard, family doctor, HMO or Telmed — move it far more than your postcode.

Groceries shift less than people assume: price differences between cantons come mostly from which shops are within reach, not from the border itself.

How do you work out the break-even month

Separate refundable from spent money and the arithmetic is short. Call what you actually spend Y, the recurring monthly saving across rent, tax and premium X, and the move pays back in month Z, where Z is Y divided by X, rounded up. The deposit is not in Y. It comes back.

Case one: Zurich to St. Gallen, a couple who both work locally. Rent falls CHF 1'200. On CHF 100'000 gross the effective tax burden is 17.2% in both cantons, so tax contributes nothing: cheaper canton does not mean lower tax. The adult premium falls from CHF 396 to CHF 375, CHF 42 across two adults, and the local transport pass from CHF 120 to CHF 85. X is about CHF 1'277. Assume one month of double rent at CHF 2'800, a removal quote of CHF 2'000, CHF 200 in fees and CHF 800 for the kitchen — assumptions, not statistics. Y is CHF 5'800: the move pays for itself in month five. They still need CHF 4'800 in cash for the new blocked account.

Case two: Zug to Basel-Stadt, single, CHF 100'000. Rent looks like a win: CHF 2'400 down to CHF 2'200. Then the other lines arrive. The effective tax burden goes from 11.4% to 21.4%, CHF 10'000 a year or CHF 833 a month, and the adult premium from CHF 348 to CHF 421, another CHF 73. X is negative: the move costs about CHF 706 a month, indefinitely. There is no break-even month. It can still be right for the job or the city — but it is a spending decision, not a saving one.

Rule of thumb: divide what you actually spend by what you actually save each month. Under 12, the move pays for itself inside a year. Over 36, you are moving for reasons other than money — a good reason, as long as you know that is the trade.

This is general information about how the Swiss system works, not individual advice — your canton, municipality and situation change the numbers.

What do you do, and in what order

  1. Read the termination dates in your lease first. Everything else schedules around them.
  2. Price the target town, not the canton — actual streets, the commune's tax multiplier, the premium region.
  3. Get three written removal quotes before you sign the new lease, so the number is in your break-even.
  4. Line up the deposit in cash, assuming the old one comes back late.
  5. Hunt for a replacement tenant from the day you give notice. Each month saved is a month off Z.
  6. Deregister and register at both communes. The new registration drives your tax roll and premium.
  7. Tell your health insurer the new address immediately. The premium follows your canton, not your paperwork.
  8. Re-run the break-even with the real quotes while you can still walk away.

The restock is the most underestimated line. A different kitchen layout and no fridge become a shopping list in week one — the list a first Swiss apartment generates, and the one behind a student move-in shop. Budget it before the move.

What Eini is building for this

The housing module is Phase 4 of Eini's roadmap and is being built. It will take your current city and rent, your gross income, your work location, your household size and how many days a week each person commutes, then score target towns on the whole picture rather than on rent alone. Our algorithm will route real public-transport and car journeys to get the true cost and time of each commute, rank Swiss towns by opportunity, and watch the rental market so you get an alert when a flat matching your criteria appears. Groceries and meal planning are what is live today.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to move canton in Switzerland?

What you actually spend is the notice-period overlap, the removal firm, commune and plate fees, and the household restock. On top of that you need up to three months' rent in cash for the new blocked deposit account, which is refundable. Get written quotes before treating a total as final.

Do I get my old rental deposit back before I pay the new one?

Usually not. The new landlord wants the blocked account funded before handing over the keys, while the old deposit is released only once the handover protocol is signed and any claims settled. Plan on carrying both for several weeks.

Does my health insurance premium change if I move canton?

Yes. KVG/LAMal premiums are set by canton and premium region of residence, so the price changes with the month you move, even though your insurer and basic cover stay the same. To change insurer for 1 January, written notice must reach the old one by the end of November.

Can I leave a Swiss flat before the three-month notice period ends?

Normally yes, if you propose a replacement tenant who is solvent, willing to take the lease on the same terms and reasonable for the landlord to accept. Propose several in writing, from the day you give notice.

Will Eini help me decide where to move?

A housing module is being built as Phase 4 of Eini's roadmap. It will take your current city and rent, gross income, work location, household size and commuting days, score target towns on the whole picture rather than rent alone, route real public-transport and car journeys for true commute cost and time, rank Swiss towns by opportunity and alert you when a matching flat appears. It is not available yet — groceries and meal planning are live today.
