The approved health insurance premiums for 2027 were published on 29 September 2026. The BAG mean premium for children (0 to 18) rises by 4.6% to CHF 128.10 a month. This Swiss mean covers all franchises and models, with and without accident cover. Young adults (19 to 25) reach CHF 338.80 and adults (26 and over) CHF 487.60. The overall mean premium is CHF 412, up 5.0% (FDHA, 29 September 2026).
For one fixed profile, the canton makes the biggest difference. Take a child (0 to 18) in the standard model with franchise CHF 0 and accident cover. In 2027, averaged over all insurers and premium regions, this costs CHF 109 a month in Zug and CHF 192 in Geneva. To switch insurer for 2027, your cancellation must reach your insurer by 30 November 2026.

| Geneva | CHF 192 | CHF 592 |
These averages are higher than the BAG mean premiums. The BAG mean counts every franchise and every model, weighted by the number of insured people. In Zug, the 2027 BAG mean premium for children is CHF 90.70, against CHF 109 for our standard profile (BAG, 29 September 2026). Our method is explained on the data and method page.
How much more a child costs than in 2026
For the same child profile, the monthly premium rises in every canton. The increase ranges from CHF 3 in Zug to CHF 8 in Jura. Nationally, the BAG mean premium for children rises by CHF 5.70.
| Canton | Child 2026 | Child 2027 | Change per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zug | CHF 106 | CHF 109 | +CHF 3 |
| Zurich | CHF 144 | CHF 150 | +CHF 6 |
| Bern | CHF 147 | CHF 152 | +CHF 5 |
| Jura | CHF 163 | CHF 171 | +CHF 8 |
| Ticino | CHF 174 | CHF 181 | +CHF 7 |
| Geneva | CHF 188 | CHF 192 | +CHF 4 |
The bigger jump comes when a child moves up an age class. Age classes follow the year of birth (Art. 91 para. 3 KVV, fedlex 2026). A child stays in the child class until the end of the year in which they turn 18. Children born in 2008 therefore pay the young adult premium from 1 January 2027. In Zurich in 2027, that means CHF 466 instead of CHF 150 a month, each with the ordinary franchise. Both are our profiles: standard model, with accident cover, average of all insurers and regions. This change gives no extra right to cancel, so the usual deadlines apply (Priminfo FAQ, 2026).
Same cover, different price: the gap between insurers
In basic insurance, all insurers pay for the same benefits (Priminfo, 2026). The table shows the cheapest and the most expensive single insurer premium for this child profile. It covers all premium regions of the canton.
| Canton | Cheapest insurer | Most expensive insurer | Gap per month | Gap per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zug | CHF 89 | CHF 139 | CHF 50 | CHF 600 |
| Zurich | CHF 116 | CHF 193 | CHF 77 | CHF 924 |
| Ticino | CHF 145 | CHF 251 | CHF 106 | CHF 1'272 |
In cantons with several premium regions, the gap within your own region can be smaller. We do not name insurers here. The official calculator lists every insurer for your municipality (Priminfo premium calculator 2027). In basic insurance, insurers must accept every person.
Family example: two adults and two children
Here is what a family of four pays on average in three cantons. Both adults are 26 or older and have franchise CHF 300. Both children are 0 to 18 and have franchise CHF 0. Everyone is in the standard model with accident cover.
| Canton | 2 adults 26+ | 2 children 0-18 | Total per month | Total per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zug | CHF 896 | CHF 218 | CHF 1'114 | CHF 13'368 |
| Zurich | CHF 1'238 | CHF 300 | CHF 1'538 | CHF 18'456 |
| Geneva | CHF 1'556 | CHF 384 | CHF 1'940 | CHF 23'280 |
The same family pays CHF 826 more a month in Geneva than in Zug. That is CHF 9'912 a year. Employees who work at least eight hours a week are insured against accidents by their employer. They can have accident cover removed from basic insurance and pay a lower premium (Priminfo, 2026). Our example includes accident cover for everyone, so employed parents without it pay less than shown.
What parents can do before 30 November
All key dates are in our premium calendar to 30 November.
- Read the premium letter. Your insurer must tell you the new 2027 premium by 31 October at the latest (Art. 7 para. 2 KVG, fedlex 2026).
- Compare each child separately. Every family member is insured individually, and there is no family insurance (Priminfo FAQ, 2026). Enter each child in the calculator.
- Cancel in time. Your cancellation must reach the insurer by Monday, 30 November 2026. The date of receipt counts, not the postmark. Priminfo suggests a registered letter sent by mid-November.
- Join the new insurer early. Your old cover only ends once the new insurer confirms that you are insured without a gap.
- Check the child franchise. The ordinary franchise for children is CHF 0. Optional franchises range from CHF 100 to CHF 600 (Art. 93 KVV, fedlex 2026). With CHF 600, the premium discount may not exceed CHF 420 a year. In return, your child's maximum cost sharing rises from CHF 350 to CHF 950 a year. A higher franchise can only start on 1 January (Art. 94 KVV). More in our franchise guide.
- Think of siblings. Children pay no franchise in the ordinary insurance, and their 10% co-payment is capped at CHF 350 a year (Art. 103 KVV). Several children of one family may be with the same insurer. Together they then pay at most the franchise and maximum co-payment of one adult (Art. 64 para. 4 KVG, fedlex 2026).
Premium reductions for children: For lower and middle incomes, cantons must cut children's premiums by at least 80%. For young adults in education, the minimum is 50% (Art. 65 para. 1bis KVG, fedlex 2026; BAG, 2026). Your canton decides who qualifies and how to apply. The cantonal offices are listed on Priminfo.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does health insurance for a child cost in 2027?
In 2027, the Swiss BAG mean premium for children (0 to 18) is CHF 128.10 a month, across all franchises and models, with and without accident cover (FDHA, 29 September 2026). Eini also calculated one profile: standard model, franchise CHF 0, accident cover. Averaged over all insurers and regions, it costs CHF 109 a month in Zug and CHF 192 in Geneva.
What is the deadline to switch a child's health insurer for 2027?
The cancellation must reach the current insurer by Monday, 30 November 2026. The date of receipt counts, not the postmark. The insurer must announce the 2027 premium by 31 October (Art. 7 KVG, Priminfo).
Do cantons reduce health premiums for children?
Yes. For lower and middle incomes, cantons must reduce children's premiums by at least 80% (Art. 65 para. 1bis KVG). For young adults in education, the minimum is 50%, and each canton decides who qualifies and how to apply.
When does my child start paying the young adult premium?
From 1 January of the year after the child turns 18, because age classes follow the year of birth (Art. 91 KVV). For 2027, this concerns children born in 2008. The change gives no extra right to cancel (Priminfo).
